Fun fact
520 CE
An early Chinese poem describes graduated candles being used to estimate the passing of time at night.
A little history of light
Some candles were once more than illumination—they were clocks.
For millennia, candlelight has helped people gather after sunset and has accompanied celebration, remembrance, reflection and ceremony.
Before mechanical clocks became common, some candles were marked in even sections. As the wax burned from one mark to the next, the flame helped people estimate the passing hours.
Today, lighting a candle can create a deliberate pause—a simple beginning for reflection, remembrance, celebration or focused intention.
One flame can mark a moment, gather attention and give an intention a visible place to begin.
